The Hot Air Ballooner, the Lost Wallet and Harbor Freight

lost wallet letter

Over the Labor Day weekend, a man names Dick Rice was participating in a charity hot air balloon event in Colorado Springs, when he lost his wallet– it fell down to who-knows-where, and he feared it was the last he’d see of it, let alone the cash, ID and credit cards.

Last week, some workers were doing maintenance on the roof of the Colorado City Harbor Freight Tools and stumbled on the wallet. A few days later, Mr. Rice received it in the mail, fully intact, along with this note:

“Dear Sir, while doing maintenance on our AC we found your wallet on our roof. I do hope the address on your ID is current. We must say in our store we have never found a wallet on our roof before and can only assume you were here for the hot air balloon event. Your friends, Harbor Freight Tools Store #58.”

Mr. Rice was so impressed that he shared his experience with the media and social channels.

“I am so impressed I thought everybody should know about these terrific folks at Harbor Freight. They didn’t have to do that, but they did. In this era of entitlement and world turmoil, these folks took the time and spent a couple bucks to make someone else’s life better,” Rice said in a post on Facebook. “Thank you Harbor Freight Store #58.”

I am very happy for Mr. Rice. Losing a wallet is extremely distressing and there’s nothing better than having it restored 100% intact.

I also want to add my thanks to the Harbor Freight team in Colorado Springs for turning one man’s trial into a mightily positive experience. Nice job, folks!

500 Stores– Harbor Freight’s Growth is Amazing!

100th store

As this Facebook post announced, Harbor Freight Tools’ 100th store opened in Metaire, LA on August 8, 2001, almost 13 years ago. That was a big deal for us, and we were excited for what the future might bring for the company.

Well, I’m thrilled to announce the Grand Opening of our 500th store in Melrose Park, Illinois, this past July 2!

This is an important milestone for Harbor Freight, but it’s not our store count that’s most meaningful.  What matters even more are our enormous advancements in quality, the remarkable company team we’ve built and, of course, our commitment to our core values– excellence, continuous improvement, collaboration, doing the right thing, humility, frugality and community. When we started Harbor Freight 37 years ago, I never imagined we would achieve this level of success.

With our core values in mind, the opening of our 500th store is the perfect time to honor our commitment to community and to giving back. So to mark the occasion, we’re bringing Harbor Freight Tools for Schools to Chicago with a donation of $100,000 to support educational advancements and vocational training in Chicago area public schools. The recipients of the donation will be identified and announced later this summer.

A huge thanks goes to all of our customers who, over the years, have helped build this company into what it is today. Your suggestions for products and locations, and your loyalty to our stores, are the reason why we’ve grown so much so fast. I look forward to our continuing the pace together. Thank you.

Harbor Freight Tools Helps Spartanburg Kids Grow

Recently, Marilyn Burnett from the Spartanburg Day School (Spartanburg, SC) asked if Harbor Freight Tools would be willing to donate a 10’x12′ greenhouse to help their students– from kindergarten to the sixth grade– “in the study of plants, vegetables, nutrition, soil, water, and team work.” Additionally, the construction of the greenhouse kit is a service project for a team of volunteershelping a Boy Scout earn his Eagle.

Harbor Freight considered this a modest request for such a wonderful cause, responded immediately, and was soon rewarded with the pictures I’ve included in the post.

As reported by Marilyn:

“At 9:30a.m. Saturday morning, a small Eagle Scout team of volunteers gathered with Eagle Scout candidate, Elliott Cox, to erect the greenhouse behind the maintenance shed at school. This location was chosen for its proximity to electricity and the concrete pad on which it would rest until it is relocated later. It took all day, but they managed to get it constructed. It will stay on this spot until we re-locate our garden after the construction of the new tennis court complex this summer. greenhouse project - frame

There are temporary plans to plant seeds in flats with the sixth grade working with 3-year-old kindergarten class. Elliott and his team will also build seed flat tables to go inside the greenhouse for this purpose. If this project is successful, the seedlings will go home with the students. Next year, with a new garden in place, this greenhouse will help supply our garden with healthy plants to begin our new, and improved school garden.”

I enjoy when stories such as Spartanburg Day School’s come across my desk. There is no price that can be placed on a child’s education and experiences. The feeling of knowing you’ve made a small contribution to that endeavor is just as priceless.

The US General Tool Cabinet: A Customer’s Journey

Harbor Freight Tools has a number of popular bestsellers in its catalog. The floor jacks, the gas engines and the generators, for instance. If there were any which could be considered the crowning jewels of the company, however, it would have to be the U.S. General tool cabinets and carts.

Not long ago, a Garage Journal forum member, who uses the name, “Mister Moose,” shared with his group his own personal journey in the hunt for the perfect tool cabinet. Hell-bent on being thorough, he shopped several hardware stores, most of the time coming away disappointed. Here are a few observations he made along the way:

  • Sears – “All the floor models are overpriced, underbuilt disappointments. I’m fine with their hand tools, but the chests and roller cabinets are not worth the price, not by a long shot. The tool chest buyer at Sears should be publicly run out of town.”
  • Home Depot – “Nothing to see here. Worse than Sears.”
  • Tractor Supply – “They carry 2 lines, Jobsmart, and Masterhand. Jobsmart is just like the Sears ball bearing series, except it’s black, and the slides are smaller… Masterhand is better… The really odd part is that they are priced the same. That’s right, you can get cheapo drawers and slides or decent ones for the same money at the same store. The 26 inch 8 drawer base is $329, and the 40” 12 drawer base is $499.”
  • Lowes – “I wouldn’t spend the $610 on the 41” model.”
  • Matco – “Just to compare to a higher end tool truck box, I measured up a 40” Matco box at a mechanic shop I do business with… It is a very deep breath to pay the extra tool truck price… and you won’t have to peel the name plate off in shame. You will however pay dearly for that name plate. This whole name plate shame thing really should stop if in fact HF has built a high quality box and offers it with no expensive commissioned salesman in a truck to the vast unwashed masses of us garage folk.”

Exhausting other avenues, he turned his attention to the US General 44″ 13-Drawer Roller Tool Cabinet (“Otherwise known as the favorite child of a large percentage of Garage Journal members”) at Harbor Freight Tools. At least he was honest about how he got to Harbor Freight:

“I hadn’t even considered the place until I started reading good reviews here.”

A big thanks to the folks at The Garage Journal! It didn’t take long for him to spot the US General tool cabinet’s quality and value (great photos, BTW!):

“Lower drawer with double slides, riveted to drawer. Look at the left side upper edge, the rolled over reinforcement is visible. Lesser drawers don’t have this. Also, look at the drawer front. Both the top drawer pull and the lower edge of the front form a structural girder that allows more weight before deforming.”

“The 14 pair roller bearing cage. Full double wall construction.”

“The steel wheel caster with polyurethane tire. You can also see the other style casters on the 56” and the 5 drawer cart. Look at the dual angle iron supports & perimeter angle iron welded to the cabinet, and compare that to the ‘U’ channel visible on the 5 drawer cart.”

In the end, it came down to either the Kobalt 27″ or the Harbor Freight “44, which were (not quite) in the same price ballpark:

“Hmmm. Better construction, and 63% more storage… This is a no brainer. I bought the HF 44” box.”

Take your own journey for the best tool cabinet or tool cart to suit your needs: function, quality, price. Don’t be surprised that, like Mister Moose, you’ll find yourself the proud owner of a U.S. General unit.
